Navigating Perimenopause and Menopause
Perimenopause and menopause mark significant transitions in a woman’s life, often accompanied by various physical and emotional changes. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a commonly used treatment to address symptoms caused by hormonal shifts during these stages. By replenishing the natural occurring hormones that are produced by the body, HRT can help alleviate symptoms to improve quality of life. At Acacia Apothecary and Wellness, we are here to support you. Our goal is to help patients in Southern Arizona understand the differences between perimenopause and menopause, ensuring personalized treatments and empowering patients to make informed health decisions during this transformative stage of life.

Perimenopause:
The menopausal transition, also known as perimenopause, marks the period between the reproductive years and menopause. This phase typically starts in a woman’s mid-40s but can occur earlier. The transition can last about 4–8 years and is characterized by declining progesterone levels, which disrupts the balance with estrogen.
These fluctuations often result in symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes (including irritability and depression), low libido, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness (causing discomfort during intercourse), and urinary urgency. These hormonal changes make perimenopause a time of significant physiological and emotional adjustment for many women.
Menopause:
Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstrual periods, confirmed after a woman has experienced 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods). The average age of menopause is approximately 51.4 years. Common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, mood swings, irritability, insomnia, weight gain, thinning hair, and joint pain.
Lack of Estrogen
Long-term consequences of estrogen deficiency can have significant impacts on a woman’s health. One major consequence is bone loss, which increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures due to the essential role of estrogen in maintaining bone density. Estrogen deficiency contributes to noticeable skin changes, including reduced elasticity, thinning, and increased dryness, which are signs of aging that can be accelerated by the lack of this hormone.
Bioidentical Hormones
At Acacia Apothecary and Wellness, we offer bioidentical hormones as part of our personalized approach to hormone therapy. Bioidentical hormones are chemically like those naturally produced by the body and are designed to mimic them. The time it takes for bioidentical hormones to take effect varies; some individuals may notice improvements within a few weeks, while it can take up to three months to experience the full effects of any type of hormone therapy.
Progesterone plays a key role in balancing estrogen. It is often taken daily in the evening or at bedtime due to its sedative effects, which can aid in improving sleep irregularities and reducing hot flashes.
Estrogen therapy can be customized to individual needs, with formulations such as “Bi-Est” (a combination of estradiol and estriol in customizable ratios like 80/20 or 50/50) or “Tri-Est” (which also includes estrone). Estrogen therapy is used to treat symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood fluctuations, low libido, and sleep disturbances, while also supporting bone health.
Testosterone is essential for women’s physical, mental, and sexual health. It helps sustain mood stability, energy levels, and cognitive function, contributing to emotional well-being and mental clarity. Symptoms of low testosterone include persistent fatigue, reduced libido, mood swings, cognitive changes, weight gain, decreased muscle mass, reduced bone density, and potential cardiovascular health issues.
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is another hormone used in HRT, as it serves as a precursor for the body to produce testosterone and estrogen. Supplementation can address issues such as aging, depression, osteoporosis, brain fog, and vaginal atrophy.
